At that time, Earth looked very different. The southern hemisphere was dominated by the giant supercontinent Gondwana, which included modern-day Antarctica, Australia, South America, Africa, India, and Zealandia.
As tectonic forces stretched Gondwana apart, Zealandia began separating from Australia and Antarctica. During this process, the crust became thinner and weaker. Eventually, much of the continent subsided below sea level. Researchers link this sinking to extensive crustal stretching before and during Gondwana’s breakup.
Unlike continents that remained high above sea level, Zealandia slowly disappeared beneath the ocean.
Not because it was destroyed.
Because it sank.
The Hidden Landscape Nobody Could See
One reason Zealandia escaped recognition for so long is that oceans conceal geology extremely well.
From space, the Pacific appears as an uninterrupted expanse of blue water. Yet beneath that surface lies a surprisingly complex landscape.
Modern bathymetric mapping reveals submerged ridges, plateaus, and mountain chains extending across vast distances. These underwater structures form the backbone of Zealandia.
New Zealand itself represents only the highest peaks of this continent.
In a sense, Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch sit atop what remains visible of a continent that mostly vanished beneath the sea.
The situation would be similar if only the Rocky Mountains of North America remained above water while everything else was submerged.
The Ancient Mountains of Zealandia
Geological studies have revealed that Zealandia contains rocks hundreds of millions of years old. Some regions preserve evidence of ancient mountain-building events that occurred long before dinosaurs appeared.
Researchers examining rock samples from New Zealand and surrounding submerged regions discovered geological signatures matching continental evolution rather than ocean-floor formation. These rocks record collisions, volcanic activity, sediment accumulation, and tectonic deformation over immense timescales.
This is one of the strongest arguments for Zealandia’s continental status.

The Pacific’s Other Giant Secret
Interestingly, Zealandia is not the only continent-sized mystery beneath the Pacific.
Far deeper—nearly 3,000 kilometers below the ocean floor—scientists have detected an enormous structure inside Earth’s mantle known as the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP). Seismic imaging shows this region is one of two giant low-velocity provinces near the core-mantle boundary, the other lying beneath Africa.
These structures are not continents.
They are immense deep-mantle anomalies detected through seismic waves traveling through Earth.
Some researchers describe them as continent-sized because they span thousands of kilometers across. Their exact composition remains debated, but they appear to influence mantle circulation and may be linked to the formation of volcanic hotspots and mantle plumes.
This coincidence is fascinating.
The Pacific hosts both a hidden continent near the surface and one of the planet’s largest mysterious structures deep within its interior.
Why Zealandia Matters
At first glance, redefining a submerged landmass as a continent might seem like a semantic exercise.
It is not.
Continents are fundamental units of Earth’s geological architecture.
Recognizing Zealandia changes how scientists reconstruct plate tectonic history, model continental breakup, and understand crustal evolution. Researchers argue that treating Zealandia as a true continent provides a more accurate framework for interpreting the geology of the southwest Pacific.
The discovery also demonstrates something important about science itself.
Even on a planet we believe we know well, major discoveries remain possible.
Earth is not a finished puzzle.

Unlike exposed continents, researchers cannot simply walk across it.

Could There Be Other Hidden Continents?
Zealandia naturally raises an intriguing question.
If an entire continent remained largely unrecognized until recent decades, could others exist?
Geologists do know of smaller continental fragments scattered around the world. However, Zealandia stands apart because of its immense size and geological coherence. Most researchers consider it unique among known submerged continental regions.
That does not mean Earth’s geological surprises are over.
Advances in marine mapping and seismic imaging continue to reveal previously unknown structures beneath oceans and within the planet’s interior.
The deeper scientists look, the more complex Earth becomes.
